Context
In January 2023, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) published the objectives of its Africa policy. The African Union (AU), its member states and the regional organisations (RECs) are important partners for Germany in developing joint solutions to global challenges. These include climate change, crises, conflicts, poverty and hunger. Respectful cooperation with political actors on Europe’s neighbouring continent is based on an understanding of shared values and goals.
Objective
BMZ can further develop and implement its Africa strategy in order to contribute to the coherence and organisational capacity of German development cooperation in the context of the Africa policy.
Approach
The project supports BMZ’s Africa Division in the implementation and strategic development of the ministry’s Africa policy. To achieve this, the advisors observe and assess the latest developments in Africa. They analyse the strategies and initiatives of African partners and other donors and identify points of contact for German development cooperation – also with regard to European and multilateral processes. The focus of the advisory services is on cooperation with the AU, cooperation in the areas of economy, climate and energy, dealing with colonial continuities and transnational cooperation – particularly with the European Union.
