Context:

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing labour markets, business models and education systems worldwide. Many Asian countries have high political expectations of AI as a driver for economic growth. At the same time, there is a shortage of practical skills and application-oriented teaching at universities.

In Germany, too, the potential offered by AI is often not fully harnessed. Cooperation schemes with Asian universities offer opportunities for innovation and for recruiting skilled workers in this field. To make use of these opportunities, shared learning spaces between business and the academic/scientific community are needed to promote responsible AI use and open innovation.

Objective:

Asian-German innovation partnerships between universities and the private sector promote the practical AI skills of future skilled workers, which in turn supports long-term employment and innovation in Asia and Germany.

Approach:

The project builds on the existing networks set up by other projects and collaborates with universities, businesses and specialist organisations in emerging Asian economies, primarily India and Viet Nam. This involves the following key areas:

- Partners from the private sector and academic/scientific community work together within an Asian-German cooperation network to develop sector-specific learning and innovation formats related to using AI.

- The project supports partner universities in Asia in establishing learning and innovation centres that bring together teaching, research and business. This makes it possible to develop and test open, practical AI solutions.

- It enables teachers, students, researchers and university managers to develop and mainstream inclusive and responsible AI skills in the long term through innovative teaching and learning formats and practice-oriented cooperation models.

- It publishes technological innovations as open source to ensure access to knowledge worldwide.
