Context:

Jordan is facing challenges due to the influx of Syrian refugees. Many host communities are no longer able to provide basic services such as waste disposal. In addition, the economic situation of Syrian refugees is deteriorating.

Objective:

The aim of the project is to improve the living conditions of particularly vulnerable refugees and Jordanians, especially women, in selected municipalities in Jordan. Waste disposal is being expanded.

Approach:

The project organises temporary employment opportunities (Cash for Work, CfW) that generate income for Syrian refugees and Jordanians in need who would otherwise have no access to work. To this end, it cooperates with the Jordanian Ministry of Local Administration (MoLA) as a political partner.

The jobs are created in municipalities that host Syrian refugees. The project advises them, provides further training and supports the CfW measures with financial resources. The jobs thus reduce municipal personnel and financial gaps and improve waste management in the short term. The municipalities can expand their waste collection and introduce separate collection of recyclable materials.

The income for Syrian refugees, Jordanians in need, people with disabilities and unregistered waste collectors also reduces social tensions and builds social cohesion. The jobs promote clean and environmentally friendly cities and protect the environment.

The improvements made by CfW are incorporated into the municipalities' waste management plans to ensure they continue beyond the project's duration. In addition, the project advises municipal and private waste management companies on organisation, operation and economic efficiency. In doing so, it considers occupational safety standards and gender-equitable distribution of work.
