Context:

As part of international cooperation, Germany regularly sends experts and managers on assignments abroad. The demands on their work are becoming more and more complex due to global challenges such as conflicts and resource scarcity. For an effective foreign assignment, they therefore require:

- Personal skills such as self-reflection and self-management

-Interpersonal skills, such as leadership and communication

- Systems expertise and societal skills such as contextual knowledge and diversity awareness.

Objective:

Experts and managers develop skills and use them effectively in their work in German international cooperation.

Approach:

For 60 years, the Academy for International Cooperation (AIZ) has been supporting experts and managers working for around 40 seconding organisations on their path to international cooperation. With AIZ’s Skills4Abroad programme, they can access a variety of learning opportunities for their work.

The training in German and English cover topics such as safety and security, language, the country context, advisory services, equal opportunities and disinformation. Travelling abroad as a family also plays an important role, and accompanying partners can participate in almost all of the courses available.

Through a wide variety of media, self-study modules and opportunities for networking and discussion, the programme creates an excellent learning environment. Experts and managers are supported in their individual learning processes and can thus develop skills in the long term.

Participants attend courses at Campus Kottenforst in Bonn-Röttgen, or digitally on the atingi learning platform. They can participate in training from six months before and up to 24 months after departure or the start of the assignment.
