Context:

Jordan grapples with substantial hurdles due to its rapidly growing, young population and the influx of refugees. These two factors exert considerable pressure on both vocational training programmes and job opportunities. Despite a pressing need for skilled craftspeople, many young Jordanians find craft professions unappealing. The mismatch between available skills and labour market demands exacerbates unemployment, particularly among youth. Moreover, the prevalent social stigma associated with vocational training further hinders efforts to address the skills gap in crucial industries.

Objective:

Young Jordanians and Syrian refugees recognise employment opportunities in the skilled crafts and benefit from improved vocational training, along with tailored information and advisory services.

Approach:

As part of the German Special Initiative on Refugees and Host Countries the project employs a three-stage approach to help vulnerable Jordanian youth and Syrian refugees access employment opportunities in skilled trades. This approach:

1. Improves the quality of vocational training in skilled crafts by collaborating with partner institutions and facilitating youth entry into training programmes;

2. Offers career guidance and advisory services tailored for young Jordanians and Syrians;

3. Promotes cooperation between private and public stakeholders, working closely with the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH).
