Context:

Agricultural and food systems worldwide are unable to ensure that everyone has access to sufficient, healthy and environmentally sound nutrition. Around 673 million people suffer from hunger, while 2.3 billion people cannot adequately feed themselves on a daily basis. On the one hand, these systems are under threat by climate change. On the other hand, these systems cause one third of global greenhouse gas emissions. However, if these systems were geared towards healthy, climate-friendly nutrition, they could promote economic development, ecological goals, and gender equality. German development cooperation projects in various contexts have the potential to contribute to this, provided they integrate nutrition in their approach.

Objective:

The nutritional situation of the target group of German development cooperation projects (especially women) has improved.

Approach:

The project offers additional nutrition-related activities for existing German development cooperation projects focusing on agroecology, value chains, social protection, health, climate, and biodiversity. These activities are based on the experience of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and scientific findings, and contribute to healthy nutrition for local populations.

The project has four components:

1. Designing projects in cooperation countries in a nutrition-sensitive way so that more people can harvest, access, purchase and consume healthy food.

2. Increasing women’s agency by supporting them in accessing rights, resources, and decision-making processes.

3. Supporting governments of cooperation countries so that the subject of nutrition can play a more prominent role in their policies and national plans.

Promoting learning by disseminating successful approaches via conferences and expert exchanges between cooperation countries.
