Context

Over the last years Kyrgyzstan has made very good progress in lowering poverty rates. Transitioning into a greener economy and seizing its opportunities for sustainable economic growth is outlined in the country’s agendas but does remain a challenge. Green economy principles imply employing the full potential of an economy. In the current economic system the relationships among suppliers, pro-ducers, mediators and customers are not as stable, as wide, or as characterised by trust as they could be. This, however, is vital for an organised and high-performing economic system and the rea-son why improving these connections is a matter of priority.

Objective

The principles of green economy for sustainable development are used in production of fruit and vegetables, livestock, and tourism.

Approach

To make Kyrgyzstan’s economy greener the project is working in the following fields:

• Policy Reform – supporting the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Kyrgyz Republic in identifying and developing green economy standards with consideration of private sector needs. Activities will ensure a friendly legislative climate for green business development.

• Private Sector Development – supporting the private sector at institutional level to introduce green technologies and practices. Activities will encourage businesses to produce greener products.

• Awareness-Raising - increasing the demand for local, organic, and environmentally friendly products. Activities will encourage the population of the country to understand and use green approaches.
