Context:
Serbia’s electricity grid is facing the challenge of properly integrating growing volumes of renewable energy – especially from solar photovoltaics and wind power – in line with European Union (EU) requirements. The political partners and grid operators do not yet have the required capabilities. In addition, the necessary regulatory requirements are in need of further development. Technical procedures and digital tools for grid analysis also have to be put in place in Serbia.
Objective:
Serbia’s electricity grid is better aligned with the requirements for renewable energy sources.
Approach:
The project is active in three areas:
It is advising the Serbian Ministry of Mining and Energy on new and updated regulations that promote grid integration of renewable energy in line with EU standards.
It is supporting the distribution and transmission system operators in putting in place the necessary expertise and digital tools to ensure the stability of the electricity grid amidst a huge expansion in renewable energy. There is a particular focus on supporting and involving young engineers. .
It is helping to shape the interface between grid operators in a way which enables them to work together efficiently and respond jointly to new challenges
