Context:

Weak economic structures and high unemployment are hindering the economic participation of young people in West Africa – particularly women. Companies often lack management and financial planning skills, technologies for new production processes or products, and access to loans.

This results in high youth unemployment and a growing lack of prospects for young people in West Africa and returning migrants.

The regional programme’s objective is to make economic participation for young people in West African countries forward-looking, attractive and accessible. In addition, the local economy in the project regions is supported in adopting more circular and climate-neutral production methods.

Objective:

Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in West Africa operating in the green and circular economy can expand their business activities and create jobs.

Approach:

The project supports young entrepreneurs in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, particularly those focusing on climate-friendly production. They receive:

- needs-driven service offerings and training on green and circular business models to help them establish a foothold in the economy

- advisory services on more efficient and environmentally friendly production techniques, equipment to enable the launch of their business, and assistance in establishing contacts with potential business partners in the region and in Europe

- access to suitable financial products and services through the support provided in drawing up business plans and establishing contact with financial service providers.
