Context:
In the Amazon region, 90 per cent of deforestation is illegal. Ecozones such as rainforests are crucial in mitigating climate change, preserving biodiversity and securing water sources and social diversity. The impacts of deforestation can be felt regionally and globally.
The Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Amazon (PPCDAm) is a key instrument with which Brazil aims to meet its environmental commitments for the ecozone. The focus is on ensuring that society, business and government at federal and state level cooperate more effectively and across policy areas to counter deforestation.
Objective:
Brazil is tackling deforestation and forest fires with innovative solutions and restoring deforested areas. The country is thus contributing to the survival of the Amazon rainforest and to global climate protection.
Approach:
The project is currently in preparation and will implement the following measures from 2026:
• It aims to better prevent deforestation in the Amazon region and monitor this more effectively, with a focus on the PPCDAm anti-deforestation plan. The project works with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the environmental monitoring agency IBAMA and the protected area agency ICMBio.
• It works on inclusive approaches to combating forest fires and environmental degradation and involves local volunteer brigades in the process.
It supports strategic processes at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and IBAMA to restore areas that have already been degraded and deforested.
