Context:
Society in Niger is characterised by deeply rooted patriarchal standards and gender roles that put women and girls at a severe disadvantage. Although there are political foundations for gender equality, there is a lack of information, access and social support to realise women’s rights in practice.
Objective:
Women and girls in Niger are demanding their rights, enabling them to participate in society, the economy and politics in a self-determined way in the long term.
Approach:
In order to support women and girls from Niger, the project has two priority areas:
- It promotes capacity building and information sharing in civil society organisations that support women and girls in accessing rights, legal advice and protection mechanisms. The project provides specialist advice to better align the services offered with needs. It also organises networking platforms to promote cooperation between relevant stakeholders.
- It uses role models known as change agents to visualise and discuss the positive effects of gender equality for society as a whole. The change agents receive training on how to shape various public campaign formats and enter into constructive dialogue with the public. The target group is women and girls in the country’s population, including particularly marginalised groups. In order to promote gender equality, the programme also includes men and boys.
