Content

The urban climate agenda in Brazil has so far lacked the necessary political attention, technical capacity and systematic support services for the local level, despite the efforts of individual municipalities, the technical staff of the Ministry responsible for urban development and third sector organisations.

Objetive

Actors at the federal, state and municipal levels implement coordinated strategies for sustainable urban development that incorporate mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change.

Approach

The project therefore supports the development of a multi-level institutional approach to climate protection in the ministry, the integration of climate criteria in funding programmes and develops proposals for a monitoring system for climate protection at the municipal level. At the municipal level, it is expanding the mentoring and peer learning approach to three focus areas relevant to climate protection: Land use in Amazonian cities, sustainable waste management, and a fair climate transition of cities with a focus on women's leadership and ethnic diversity. It incorporates local experiences, accompanies the activities through training programmes, cooperates with other IKI projects and makes its learning experiences available to German policy-makers.
