Context :
Albania is aiming to be a member state of the European Union (EU) by 2030 and has been a candidate country since 2014. One of the criteria for accession is that the country aligns itself with European legislation on food safety, veterinary and plant health. This ensures food safety for everyone – in Albania and in the EU.
Objective:
The Albanian system of food control and consumer information has been improved in terms of legislation, institutions, organisation and expertise. This enables gradual alignment with EU standards.
Approach:
On behalf of the EU and BMZ, the project supports Albania in meeting the food safety requirements and standards necessary for EU accession. To this end, together with the EU, it is developing a modern and integrated system that can serve as a model project in the Western Balkans and for future EU accession processes. The project is also supporting Albania in aligning the national legal framework with the EU acquis in order to ensure that food control and consumer information are managed safely and efficiently. The competent authorities are aligning the structures, processes and services of the administration accordingly. Staff at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and its subordinate agencies are receiving training to develop standardised procedures. In addition, the project informs food businesses about the necessary adjustments to EU standards and supports them in implementing these changes. It also supports the nationwide network for laboratory analysis of plant and animal products, as well as border control posts that inspect foodstuffs and animals entering and leaving the country, in modernising and aligning with EU standards.
