Context:
The climate, biodiversity and pollution crises are threatening natural resources around the world. The services provided by ecosystems on land and in the sea are an international prerequisite for peace, security and prosperity. For example, around one third of humanity is directly dependent on forests for survival. In addition, half of global gross domestic product relies on our natural environment.
Objective:
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) promotes social, ecological and economic transformation in its partner countries and contributes to achieving the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Approach:
The project advises BMZ on technical and strategic matters in order to shape key international development policy processes and initiatives for biodiversity and forest conservation. It supports the Ministry in managing and further developing its biodiversity and forest conservation portfolio. For example, it proposes new approaches and initiatives or develops them with cooperation partners. In international partnerships and in cooperation with other donors, the project supports BMZ in providing effective biodiversity and forest financing. It is particularly involved in configuring the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) and promoting the rights, resources and representation of indigenous peoples and local communities.
