Context

Research indicates that children exposed to violence in early life, are more likely to become perpetrators or victims of violence in adulthood. Parents and caregivers affected by interpersonal violence often struggle to provide a secure environment for their children. Patriarchal gender norms significantly contribute to gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa, making violence an accepted method of conflict resolution among many people.

To counter this, promoting positive gender norms and healthy masculinity are crucial components of children's development. Implementing gender-responsive approaches within childcare environments can reduce the risk of children experiencing or committing violence in both childhood and adulthood. These approaches also foster gender equality and contribute to building a safer and more inclusive society for future generations.

Objective

The structural conditions for implementing evidence-based, gender-responsive early violence prevention measures have been improved.

Approach

The project focuses on early violence prevention for children aged 0-12 targeting the caregiving environments for children, early childhood development centres, and schools, while addressing the intersections between violence against women and children.

The project uses early interventions for long term impact through three main areas: (1) Localised implementation (2) Improved multistakeholder coordination and (3) Enhanced institutional support.

Through these measures and collaboration with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and other relevant state and non-state actors, the project aims to support effective early violence prevention approaches.
