Context:
In Tunisia, electricity production relies primarily on the combustion of natural gas, more than half of which is imported. This high level of energy dependency poses significant challenges to energy security and places considerable pressure on public finances.
However, the country has substantial potential in renewable energy sources. A larger-scale deployment of these energy sources could help ease the State’s budgetary burden while supporting sustainable economic development that creates local value.
Despite the existence of ambitious strategies for energy transition, implementation still faces several challenges. Organisational, economic, and institutional hurdles limit the growth of renewable energy and the emergence of a decarbonized economy. Strengthening strategic, regulatory, and technical capacities in both the public and private sectors remains a key lever to accelerating this transition.
Objective:
Strategic, regulatory, and technical conditions are improved to accelerate the implementation of the energy transition in Tunisia.
Approach:
In collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy (MIME) and the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG), and through an integrated approach at the macro, meso, and micro levels, the project aims to:
Establish a strategic and regulatory framework conducive to accelerating the energy transition;
Strengthen STEG’s capacities in electricity grid management to enable the increasing integration of renewable energy sources;
Develop initial and continuous training programs to meet the needs of a changing labor market, shaped by the emergence of new professions related to renewable energy and low-carbon technologies.
The project also places particular emphasis on the development of rural areas, while promoting digitalization and advancing gender equality in the energy sector.
