Context:
Climate change is affecting coffee production worldwide, increasingly leading to declining quality and yields. Ethiopia is the country of origin of Arabica coffee. Despite its exceptional genetic diversity in coffee, Ethiopia has so far lacked the scientific capacity and structures to systematically develop and disseminate high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties.
Objective:
To effectively address climate change, the project supports the National Variety Development Program in identifying, developing and putting climate-resilient and high-performing coffee varieties into practice through national policies and advisory structures.
Approach:
To this end, scientific capacities are being built up and institutional structures for the propagation, evaluation and dissemination of improved varieties are being strengthened, also through international scientific collaboration.
The target group comprises scientists and specialist staff at national research institutions. The project partner is the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture.
