Context:
Agriculture is the main source of livelihood and income for many people in Burkina Faso. However, climate change is damaging the soil. There is often a lack of agricultural inputs such as seeds, advisory services, financing and trade opportunities. Options for storing, processing and selling agricultural produce are also insufficient. As a result, many farms are unable to produce as much as they could and are not well prepared for crises. Women, young people and internally displaced persons are particularly affected.
Objective:
People in rural Burkina Faso are better able to cope with economic, climate and social challenges. They are improving their income and job prospects through agroecology, which is environmentally friendly, socially and economically sustainable production.
Approach:
The project supports smallholder farms, farmers’ organisations and agri-based micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the Guiriko and Djôrô regions.
It promotes agroecological production through training, demonstration plots and innovation platforms. Moreover, it expands government advisory and training services.
Furthermore, it supports enterprises and organisations in producing, processing and marketing agricultural products sustainably. It provides training and advice, supports organisational development and contributes to funding.
Particular attention is paid to women, young people and internally displaced persons.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Animal and Fisheries Resources as well as government, civil society and private partners. The KfW Development Bank is providing additional funding.
