Context
India's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) aim to reduce carbon (CO2) emissions by 33 to 35 per cent by 2030. To achieve this, the Government of India is promoting hybrid and electric vehicles to reduce reliance on fossil fuels in transportation.
However, transitioning to electric mobility poses challenges for cities, including gathering data for project planning, securing funds for buses and infrastructure as well as upgrading power grids to meet the increased energy demand. Cities need to ensure that rising electricity needs are met with renewable sources. Coordinating transport and energy networks adds further complexity for local authorities as they navigate technical and administrative hurdles.
Objective
The transition to long-term and climate-friendly electric mobility has been achieved by coupling transport and energy systems to reduce emission and fossil fuel use.
Approach
The project drives forward the transition to climate-friendly electric mobility in India by fostering collaboration among national and local stakeholders. This approach enhances cooperation processes across different governance structures, improves implementation mechanisms, and develops strategic competencies. Specific activities include:
• Establishing an enabling framework to facilitate the shift to electric mobility;
• Developing strategies to ensure the supply of renewable energy for electric vehicles;
• Expanding pilot activities to additional cities and disseminating knowledge through joint-learning formats.
